I Saw You

I saw you yesterday, at Uniprix, in the Pointe-Claire Shopping Centre. I was waiting at one cash and I could see you, hear you, clearly. You were with your mother. She had a walker. You were helping her pay for her items. It was very obvious that your mom has dementia or Alzheimer’s.

You spoke to her with such love, such patience, such kindness. She couldn’t remember what she bought and you explained it to her; you weren’t condescending or impatient. You spoke as if she had not already asked the same question. You treated her with dignity, helped her pay for her items. As you walked by me, I heard her ask you if she had paid and you assured her that she had. You let her walk on her own, with just a light touch on her arm. You made my heart sing. You put such a lovely glow on the day. Watching your devotion, seeing that love you have for her in your eyes.

I saw you again, sitting on a bench with your father, showing your mother’s purchases. She had forgotten what she had bought – you explained it to her with patience. I slowed my pace just so I could hear that loving tone to your voice.

You reminded me of how lucky I had been to care for my own mother in her last few years with us. You reminded me how much I loved her and how much I miss her. In a world with horror on every page, with articles of the forgotten elderly, of their abuse; I saw you and it made me happy to know that your parents will never be forgotten, will never be abused when you are at the switch.

Thank you and bless you.

Magic; A Rational View

By Martin Demers

Mad_scientistThe word is: MAGIC
From the Merriam-Webster dictionary:

1 a : the use of means (as charms or spells) believed to have supernatural power over natural forces b : magic rites or incantations
2 a : an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source b : something that seems to cast a spell
3 : the art of producing illusions by sleight of hand

Stop me if you’ve heard this one: a guy was walking down the streets of suburban Montreal, and happens to come across a gentleman busy planting dozens of little red flags in his front lawn. Understandably curious, he asked the man what he was doing. “Well, I’m planting these red flags to keep the African buffalo away from my house.” “But,” replied the first guy, “there aren’t any African buffalo anywhere in North America.” “Exactly!” said the second gentleman. “It’s working!”

I was reminded of that old joke this past weekend. My friend PG had recently gone through a bad breakup with her idiot of an ex-boyfriend, and he’d moved out of town. Well, I won’t bore you with the details, but to make a long story short he said he was going to sue for custody of their child. I personally think it’s only bluff and bluster, but some members of our gang decided to forestall him; so, with Dave writing the ritual, three people did a binding spell on the little weasel, to prevent him from doing any harm to PG. I was asked to participate (since it was done in our house) but politely declined. Later, (after being told the spell went well) I asked Laurie how she knew it had worked, and she replied something to the effect of “How do we know if anything works?”

I wasn’t sure if she referred to just knowing if this particular spell worked, or knowing if any spell works, but it really stuck to my mind.

Last year, just before I left the local Pagan e-mail list, I was part of a rather heated discussion on whether or not it was possible to know if a magical spell actually worked or not. I maintained that it was perfectly possible to use the old-fashioned scientific method on the subject; others asserted that belief in magic was a spiritual belief and therefore impossible to test with the scientific method… while still talking how this or that spell had this or that effect on their lives. They saw no contradiction in this. They maintained that you had to believe in magic in order to perceive the effects of a spell, and were unwilling (or unable) to explain how and why, if that were really the case, one can allegedly use magic to influence total strangers who may or may not believe in magic in the first place. They were perfectly happy to not know for certain, content to have possibly influenced the outcome of events. Several of the participants in the discussion also stated that belief in magic is no different than belief in physics or other areas of science, because of course we have to take it on faith that things like electrons and Mars actually exist, since we have no way of seeing them directly. The sense of magic as a religious belief was so strong that one individual took personal offense at my attempts to bring the concept of magic under the scientific method and left in a huff. The debate got nowhere, and eventually got shut down by the list owner. By that time, I was mightily fed up with it all, and fed up with the generally anti-intellectual and anti-scientific tone of the group, and left the list for good.

Looking back on the whole incident, and on my conversation with Laurie, I think I see why the debate got nowhere, and why I was so frustrated. The problem is that we were approaching the problem from radically different perspectives; the vast majority of people on that list (and, from what I can gather, the majority of people involved in neo-Paganism) already assumed that magic exists, however nebulously or ambiguously that term is defined. Stating that the belief in magic is part of their religion, they cannot prove or justify it any further than that because at this point they are using an epistemological method usually called Rationalism, with a healthy dose of Intuition thrown into the mix. That is, magic is known or apprehended by introspection, by contemplation, by cogitation, not by direct sensory experience or Empiricism. Magic, according to them, is not an objective phenomenon; it is a state of mind, the result of belief.

And this was most curious, because that whole discussion started after the list owner commented on the (possible) real-life effect of (possibly) a spell cast by someone to catch some criminals who were operating in the Montreal area. He congratulated us in general for having a positive magical influence in helping the police. Was anything done? Did someone have a positive influence? How? To what extent? No-one could tell.

There were many on that list who stated the belief that, someday, science might explain exactly what magic is and give it a sound technical basis. They invoked the case of alchemy, a mostly spiritual-magical discipline that became the foundation for the science of chemistry. Now, I don’t believe that will happen, but I might be mistaken. (As Bertrand Russell wrote: “I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong.”). However, let’s get something straight: alchemy, for all its mystical trappings, dealt with very real physical phenomena; the alchemists therefore had plenty of concrete experimental data to work with, which greatly facilitated the switch between magical thinking and scientific thinking. Magic (or, at least, the magic that’s popularized in the New Age) does not have that luxury, as it deals with probabilities and may-have-beens and fuzzy results; and the careful, objective study of this kind of phenomenon will have to overcome a whole slew of informational fallacies that’s been plaguing the New Age community since it began.

Can magic become a science? Perhaps. But if that is to be the case, it’ll be essential to stop thinking magically about magic.

Let Him Who Hath Understanding Reckon The Number Of The Beast

cropped-satan-witcheshaven-com-2.jpg

I am going to “postulate”. Kind of sounds like a skin condition involving boils or sores or something, doesn’t it?

Kind of apropos for this piece.

I’ve long held a fascination with apocalyptic writings, theories on this devil persona and the people who believe in the mythology. This has led me to read and research in some very strange areas. I’ve done the Satanic Bible. It was a joke, it was childish, nonsensical and as close to plagiarism as you can get. Most of the material is Thelemic but perverted, twisted to meet an end. A con-man’s end. Don’t believe me?

I recently read “The Birth of Satan” but at the same time, I also read something called “Not in Kansas Anymore” by Christine Wicker.

The Birth of Satan book had my panties in a knot as it was, then I read a short paragraph by Christine on the reaction of people when she told them she would be doing an investigative piece on magic/Magick in America.

Went a little nuclear…here is the paragraph that in combination with a discussion I was waving with someone else and the whole Birth of Satan thing, created the necessary ingredients for an explosion.

Quote from Page 4:

“They’re power-hungry, the mundanes said of the magical people. They’re immoral, people said, and they’re scary. Playing with the dark arts could plunge me into evil. I’d be pulled toward depravity, they said. Blasphemy would begin to seem like truth, bad like good, God like Satan. It had happened to people through the centuries, they said. And they were right. All that did happen.”

Yup, my opinion? It did all happen only it was the other way around and it wasn’t any entity called Satan either. It was Christianity and its application of a mish-mash of religious beliefs, stirred together by some guy named Jesus and his “homies.”

Let’s take a brief tour of the bible, shall we

  1. Exactly how many towns did Satan destroy? Zip.
  2. How many plagues did this “evil” guy send out to torment the world? None.
  3. That big flood? Was that Satan or the other dude? Other dude.
  4. How many people have died to honour this Satan? Not a one.
  5. Or been slaughtered in his name? None.

I have read the bible…don’t recall Satan ever asking for a child to be sacrificed, even if it was just some kind of perverse test of faith. And what about Job and all those horrendous events foisted on him due to a gamble, a bet between God and this devil? What kind of mind would come up with a test so horrible, so cruel?

Let me answer that one, for you. An evil one.

Who was it that sacrificed his own son? Lucifer? The Adversary? Ha-Satan?

Who was it that allowed said son to be tortured, humiliated and finally left to die, slowly, in one of the worst ways possible? This would be that Jehovah, One God…Allah…whatever name he’s adopted for the time and place.

And exactly who was it who sentenced women to give birth in blood and in pain? Not that Satan guy. In fact, the only thing the snake suggested was a little knowledge might not be a bad thing for Adam and Eve. Could be the snake had a better handle on the personality of this so-called “God” than ordinarily assumed.

All three of the big religions – Islam, Judaism and Christianity believe in this one god. This guy who advocates hate, killing, genocide and every other ‘cide’ you can come up with.

Was it Satan who claimed that witches should be burned at the stake? Hung from trees. Torn apart by wild dogs? Nope. Not him. He never spoke a word on the topic.

In fact, I am having one helluva time (no pun intended..okay, yeah..it was intended ) finding one thing that Satan requested that was evil. All the true evil, the most horrendous evil, has been perpetrated in this one god’s name or at his, specific, request.

In fact? Everything I’ve read and researched and I’ve done a lot of it – speaks of one thing. There never was a Satan. Not this dark and terrible entity living in a place with out of control central heating.

He was created to explain away all the nastiness in the world. His persona was drawn from the myth of Gilgamesh, from Zoastrian belief, and a bunch of other ancient myths. Including Judaism. God was the one who sent angels to commit atrocities against humanity. The angels were just following orders.

The angels…and which one was the first and foremost brutal tool of this one god?

Not Lucifer.

T’was Gabriel. He wrought all kinds of havoc for his boss.

And Lucifer? Nada. He, according to legend, wanted to BE god, felt he could do a much better job. And considering this one god’s record of at, the very least, dubious accomplishments? He probably could have.

This one god? Murdered Lot’s wife…for what? Looking over her shoulder. Turned the poor woman into a pillar of salt.

Kept old Moses and his crew wandering the desert for 40 years.

Before that? Had the Jews in slavery.

Let’s look at the cast of current characters, doing “god’s work.”

We had Osama, slaughtering on behalf of his Allah. We had Jerry Falwell.

We have Pat Robertson, purveyors of hatred and religious bigotry.

Let’s not forget Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye.

Ted Haggard.

I could list the evil done in their one god’s name until the apocalypse.

We had Torquemada. Cotton Mather. A list of people who have brought pain, fear and more evil than any Satan could have possibly dreamed of creating.

And the Catholic Church. The protector of all things truly evil. Child molesters, murderers, rapists.

And this Satan guy is supposed to be the epitome of evil?

The lack of logic gives me a headache. That so many billions of people could have swallowed this crap is really depressing.

Truly, is the human race that stupid?

(Don’t answer..please, don’t answer…I’ll want to jump off a bridge..)

And so, WE are the evil ones?

Those of us who look to magick to provide a little more “soul” to our lives? Those of us who practice to create beauty, peace and contentment with what we have been given?

Those of us who understand that no god should be demanding blood in sacrifice. Past practices, notwithstanding. We’ve grown since then, unlike the Big 3 who have remained in stasis most of the time, with occasional forays into barbarism, just for chuckles or to appease this blood thirsty deity of theirs.

We should be burned at the stake, murdered for our beliefs? We, Witches.

Our Deities demand no blood sacrifices from us. Our Deities demand that we live in truth and honour. And we’re the ones fooled?

Does anyone else see something horribly, horribly wrong with this picture?

Perhaps the bible is missing a few books…perhaps the evil one they refer to so often, won the war. Perhaps Revelations already occurred.

Maybe this Evil One has been having a great time fooling them all. Having himself a real blood party.

Maybe the real god was cast out. Maybe all these good, faithful servants of god have been hornswoggled. I mean really, how much honest and good faith could someone who has been known as God’s Rottweiler teach his followers?

Perhaps I have been fooled by Satan. Fooled into doing as much good as I can, as an individual in this world. Perhaps he’s worked his wiles on me, causing me to raise my children to be honest, hard-working and moral men. Telling me not to lie or to steal or to hate. If that’s the case? Then paint me red, paste some horns on my head and call me a Devil Worshipper. I would rather live my life as an honest, hard-working woman of good intent than a blind sheep following a blood thirsty god who demands human sacrifice.

So, the conclusion I’ve come to believe, is a possibility? The real evil one won the war of Revelations and his followers all wear the sign. The crucifix.

Sex, Drugs and the Witches

Sex, Drugs and the Witches
By
Marzanna

coven

*This article first appeared in the October 2007 edition of Heads Magazine.

It’s a dark and stormy night; camera pans to a large mansion or old rundown house, stone facade or trashed wooden front, gargoyles that look like someone’s mother-in-law or scary dead tree. Let’s not forget the mandatory thunderstorm or ominous full moon. Camera moves again and focuses on an unsuspecting group of teens or young couple as they approach the old mansion or house.

More camera action and creepy music as the lens zooms in on a window candles, usually black, are all over the place, hooded figures, also usually in black stand in a circle amid much chanting of demonic sounding Latin “Sanguis bebimus, corpus edimus. Ave Satani!”

On the floor a pentacle has been painted and in the center of the pent? An altar. There’s some scary looking dude with a wicked dagger poised over the mid-section of a sweet young thang. A kickass chalice in the frame as well and you just know that it is there to catch her blood. The usual goat head or two just adding to the wholesome down-home atmosphere. These scary folks are Witches. Doing Satan’s work.

Of course, there is a problem with this scene. Witches don’t believe in Satan. Apparently, in Hollywood? This is a minor detail.

Ah, so it must be Halloween again! Munchie heaven. Dress up and live out your private fantasies, maybe in your Mom’s nicest frock and garter belt. Who am I to judge?

For me? For my crew? It’s Samhain, not Halloween. This is a major Sabbat, in fact, probably one of our favourite Sabbats.

You see, we’re Witches. The real deal, not your green skinned cartoon characters or New Age types “We All Come From the Goddess” fruitcakes; we’re the real thing, rituals, spells, hexes and when the mood hits? Orgies of food, drink and love to celebrate our Sabbats.

There are 8 Sabbats in all; Yule, Imbolg, Ostara, Beltaine, Litha, Lughnassadh, Mabon and Samhain. 4 of them are Fire Festivals, 2 celebrate the Equinoxes (Spring and Fall) and 2 celebrate the Solstices (Summer and Winter). Our Sabbats (Holy days if you prefer) celebrate natural events. They celebrate life, not long dead ideas and concepts. The Sabbats celebrate both the God and the Goddess. We are not gender specific. We acknowledge and worship both genders equally. Let’s face it, without both? There can’t be life and what would remain wouldn’t be worth living.

Traditionally, the God begins to gain strength at Yule and continues until late summer, when his strength begins to wane. The Goddess aspects worshipped go through a maiden, mother and crone transformation.

  • Yule Winter Solstice. We celebrate the re-birth of the Sun. Days are starting to get longer. Gifts in honour of the re-birth are exchanged; much mulled wine, celebration and song. Traditionally, we meet the sun’s rise with banging of pots, drums or just a good old Hoorah. Neighbours aren’t really happy with this, so in the modern world, we scale it down and welcome the sun in the house/apartment on a much lower volume scale.
  • Imbolg Fire Festival. The earth is beginning to warm and spring, new life and hope is on the way. Brighid, an old Celtic deity is honoured. She represents the coming season of birth, the Spring’s birth, the birth of the animals of spring. She is our sign of new hope, new life and a fresh beginning.
  • Ostara Spring Equinox Days and nights are equal in length. Myth has the goddess Ostara as the symbol of fertility (we’re real big on the virility, fertility themes) According to myth, Ostara loved children; she had a pet bird (some say it was a raven but who knows? It’s a myth) she changed her pet bird into a rabbit to amuse the kids. The rabbit summoned up a bunch of eggs in all sorts of bright colours. Ostara gave the eggs to the children, hence the tradition of Easter eggs. Again, spring wines are used to celebrate and dishes that use eggs as a main ingredient are served. Much laughter, song and general fun.
  • Beltane Fire Festival Fertility, love and the wonderful randiness nature and the Gods have bestowed upon us. Yup, a celebration of the act of love and procreation. Wine, women/men and song; activities that center on all aspects of procreation, birth and growth. This is a festival geared toward the younger, virile and fruitful members of coven although, older members are welcomed to celebrate as their supply of Viagra will allow. Another name for Beltane is Cetsamhain. Beltane is the polar opposite of the Sabbat, Samhain.
  • Litha Summer Solstice Longest day of the year and the mark of days growing shorter. It’s a bittersweet time. Days are going to shorten but harvests are on the way. The grapes of the vine will be ripe and fields full of fresh fruits, vegetables and grains. Much feasting and “festing” is on the way. The Greenman or the God is at his peak at this time of year. More celebration of virility and fecundity.
  • Lughnassadh Fire Festival and the first of the 3 harvests. Wine, women/men and song. The grains and the corn are ripe; the God is weakening and the Goddess begins to age. In some traditions, a mock battle is held; the Old Stag King must battle the New Stag King. Old Stag King always bites it. His time to rule is, pretty much, over. It isn’t as dismal as it sounds; now we get to celebrate the new King. Off with the old and in with the new; party time.
  • Mabon Autumn Equinox Day and night are equal again, just as they were at Ostara. This is the second harvest. A kind of Thanksgiving really, the tables are set with the bounty of the fields. Underneath all that though, is the realization that another year is coming to a close and we begin to celebrate all that we’ve accomplished. It’s a time of meditation as well and a good many folks use other harvests to help them with the meditation process. Buds are pulled out and pipes stoked. Actually, whenever meditation is required, during ritual or just personal meditative work; a lot of Witches will employ various organics; more on this a little further along.
  • Samhain Fire Festival (sow-in or sow-een). It is the original Celtic term for the last harvest, the time for culling herds and getting your shit together before winter hits. We also believe that the veil between our world, the physical and the other world, the Shadow World, is at its most thin. We employ various forms of divination and contact with friends, relatives and other loved ones who have passed from this veil to the next. The rituals themselves are pretty solemn, in keeping with the occasion but following ritual? Party like its 999. The costumes date way back, actually. The costumes were worn to fool evil spirits roaming around. If they couldn’t recognize you? They couldn’t hurt you. The thinning of the veil is a double-edged sword. Sure, it’s easier to contact departed friendly folks but the Shadow World isn’t only populated by nice folks, there are just as many, not-so-nice entities over there. We tend to be very careful when we employ any type of Shadow World contact. ‘Cause ya never know.

Samhain is actually closer to your New Year’s Eve except we’re celebrating the end of the year and trying to get our ya-ya’s in before the traditional dark, cold and killing winter. It is how we honour the memory of those long dead. We honour two Deity archetypes; the Dark Lord and the Bone Mother and yes, they are as dark as they sound.

They reign over both worlds, this one and the Shadow World. And They are always ready, willing and able to take you from one side to the other, unfortunately, it is usually only a one-way ticket EXCEPT at Samhain. Then They offer return trips.

Television, newspapers and movies roll us on out for a little vicarious thrill or two at this time of year. We’re ignored, pretty much, the rest of the time. No offense taken, by the way. You guys do the same thing to that chubby old dude with the red suit and beard.

I figure we’re in good company. The fat bearded guy takes care of the good cheer shit and we’re hauled out to scare the bejeebers out of you. If it works for you? It’s all good.

Of course the real difference is? Santa Claus is imaginary and we are very, very real. We’re your neighbours, your co-workers, your teachers and possibly, if you are really dumb, your enemies but not for long.

Don’t get your boxers in a twist; by the time you finish reading this? You may want to join us, not hide from us.

You’ll need a little more background first;

  • We are polytheistic; this means we believe in more than one god.
  • We don’t believe in the existence of the Devil/Satan. He’s a Christian manifestation actually.
  • We believe life is meant to be enjoyed, lived to the fullest. Wine, women/men and song. Enjoying life, not feeling guilty because we’re having a good time.span>
  • We believe in the power of Magick as opposed to the Chris Angel ‘pull a Chrysler out of my ass’ crap. Laws of energy are used to bend situations to our own will or needs. And yeah, that means not only your run of the mill love spells but a really good hex or two when required.
  • We believe in the basic nature of the natural world, we’re a part of it. We aren’t masters of it. The survival of the fittest. Natural law was here long before we arrived and it will be around long after Green Peace and PETA have bit the dust.
  • We don’t believe organic pleasures are wrong; in fact, we tend to celebrate all our major days with all sorts of natural treasures as well as those terrific “sins of the flesh.” These things are as much a part of nature as are we. NATURAL pleasures, not false pleasures manufactured in a lab. Those are not pleasures. We don’t endorse nor do we accept the use of chemicals. (Sorry.)
  • We don’t believe in the Bible, the Q’ran or the Torah. We have no Holy Book that orders our lives. We command our own lives. We, essentially, make our own rules with certain laws in mind; call them Karmic laws for the sake of simplicity.

Which brings us to the whole sins thing; we don’t believe in sin.

  • We believe that we are meant to do as we wish but we also understand that everything has a price. We choose whether or not we’re willing to pay the price.

Example? Girlfriend does your best friend? You put an, admittedly, well deserved curse/hex on the both of them.

Well, think back to your high school physics class; for every action there is a reaction. You better be ready for the consequences otherwise, back the hell off Jack! The reaction will be swift and immediate.

There ain’t no big book of celestial black marks recording your misdeeds. Screw up and you’ll get it back in the here and now; not after you’re worm food.

This leads to the “going to hell” thing.

  • We don’t believe in the Devil or Satan so believing that he has some sort of subterranean residence with out of control central heating is, pretty much, ridiculous.

Another big thing that separates us from you?

  • We don’t believe in a middleman. No one speaks to our Deities on our behalf. We believe Deities are omnipresent and available to whoever wishes a little conversation.

Life makes such conversations difficult. We’re running around, worried about money, worried about the bills, exams, tuition, jobs and the general sorry state of world affairs. It’s hard to achieve a state of mind necessary for enlightenment. Now, how can this be cured? Let’s see now, the magazine is Heads. How about some bud? A few ‘shrooms? Or some other herbal cure? Damiana for example; great herb for releasing those inhibitions. These things were used long before the government and its Draconian laws existed.

Using organics to achieve a meditative state takes practice (Can I get a Hallelujah?); every individual is different. Our physiology differs with regard to how much we need to attain meditative state as opposed to that pleasant comatose state. So, in this case? Practice makes perfect. (Can I get an Amen?)

Some Witches will use organics in ritual (kind of a mass for Witches); others will use it prior to ritual. Some don’t use it at all. It all depends on the individual’s ability to attain a state of total relaxation.

Again though and I have to make this really clear;

  • We don’t use chemicals. No acid, no ‘X’, no Coke. These aren’t natural; they are manmade and run directly contrary to our beliefs. While we celebrate life and death; we don’t believe in hastening the whole death aspect of things.

The legends of Witches’ orgies and nekkidness and much fornicating? All stories have a basis in fact. The facts are, yes, there is nudity, there is lovemaking and there is much in the way of good, natural fun.

  • We CELEBRATE life, love and nature; we aren’t ashamed of it. We don’t believe that sex is dirty or organics are wrong. So yes, orgies we hold, orgies of pleasure, food and fun.

Now, just like what has occurred with all the world’s belief systems; our own system has branched off. You’ll find all sorts of people out there claiming Witch status. We believe they can call themselves whatever they wish to call themselves; doesn’t necessarily make it accurate but who cares? You’ll recognize them, most of them are vegans, they don’t smoke, drink and rarely have guilt free sex. We call them “Fluffy Bunnies.”

They are usually all about the female aspect of Deity. Light, love and all that marshmallow, yummy stuff. The male Fluffy Bunnies are all about being in touch with their feminine sides. We, on the other hand, prefer our men to be men and women to be women. Neither stronger than the other, just different. If you are around them? You may feel like your blood sugar has suddenly gone through the roof and you have that nauseated feeling, like you’ve eaten way too much candy.

Another sign that you are in the presence of a Fluffy Bunny? Bookshelves lined with ‘authors’ such as Silver Ravenwolf, Scott Cunningham and that infamous Laurie Cabot of Salem fame. What you won’t find is anything by Ronald Hutton, Israel Regardie, Eliphas Levi or Uncle Bugger (Aleister Crowley).

Want to really know what all this is about? Read some Regardie, jump into some Crowley. Sort through Levi. Try some Isaac Bonewits for a more modern and humorous perspective. Stay the hell off the internet.

Fluffies know nothing about the darker aspects of being a Witch. They couldn’t summon a demon if their lives depended on it. In fact, a good lot of them don’t acknowledge the existence of demons. Demons are as necessary to what we do as celebrating the Sabbats.

A well know phrase for us? A Witch who cannot kill; cannot heal. This is usually accepted as a thorough knowledge of various herbal mixtures/tinctures and potions but it applies across our span of knowledge. There are entities who are summoned for one purpose and one purpose only and you better believe, the purpose has nothing to do with light or love.

Consider the medieval ‘flying potions’ rumoured to have been used by our forbearers; it contained belladonna, hemlock, wolfsbane, Morning Glory seeds. No wonder they thought they were flying; a thorough knowledge of these plants and their properties are a prerequisite.

If you don’t know what you’re doing? We’ll be contacting you at Samhain, as you sit, perplexed, on the other side, wondering what went wrong.

Are we evil? Are we scary? Depends on your perspective.

We scare the theocracies because we don’t believe in their right to exist.

We scare the governments and other sections of legislature and justice because we believe that we are responsible for our own behaviours; we don’t need some fat politician feeding off our sweat to tell us what is right and what is wrong.

We don’t need someone telling us what we should or should not be doing with this gift called life. We are the original Anarchists.

So celebrate Halloween or Samhain, celebrate it like never before.

Indulge your fantasy; that’s what it is all about. It is a celebration of life, love and all the natural world has to offer you. Winter’s dark, winter’s cold comes too quickly.

We are the ones who will open your mind.
Leave the weak and the haunted behind.

Big Brother is Watching

bigbrotherDoes anyone truly believe they have any personal privacy? If they do, then I have some lovely land in the Everglades for sale. Even those who believe themselves to be “Off the Grid” are not. There is no “Off the Grid.” And? Who cares? The best way to thwart Big Brother is to not be afraid of Big Brother – fear is their ultimate weapon. Also, we do need to get over our sense of self-importance. Why would B.B. have any interest in my daily activities? It wouldn’t. So, I go about my life and every now and then, I will look up at one of those security cameras, stick out my tongue or make a face. Just for my own amusement. I’ve also been known to go to flagged web sites, just to keep anyone who is watching, on their toes.

I don’t do drugs. I don’t associate with rebels, known criminals or subversive elements. My religious beliefs are easily accessed, my political beliefs are … well, none. I don’t believe in politics. Although in all honesty, every once in a while, B.B. will get my back up and I’ll stare back at ’em. Like that agreement my company wanted me to sign, giving them access to my above mentioned personal info as well as my sexual preferences and any groups to which I may belong. The company was told to read the Canadian Charter of Rights and then told, ever so politely to take that form and stuff it up their collective arses. This is not Bush’s U.S.A. This is Canada and last time I checked, we were still a country in our own right, in theory, anyway.

I know that if CSIS really wanted to obtain information on me, they could have free and easy access to my internet comings and goings, they could read my e-mails and collect my passwords. Kind of flattering in a black sort of way, that any government agency would find me to be that fascinating. Personally? I bore myself – I can’t imagine anyone being that interested in my little work-a-day world.

Companies monitor our computer usage via cookies – where do we go, what do we buy, what are our spending habits – etc. Again, feel free, saves me the trouble of answering stupid surveys.

There are internet bodies that feed into this paranoia and offer “top secret, untraceable” internet travel; bull crap. If the government is that interested in your doings – they can track you. And really, how better to flag yourself and save B.B. the trouble than through using one of these programs or web sites.

So yes, Big Brother is watching. Let them watch – hell, I’ll make ’em some coffee for their trouble and they’ll need it, if they are watching my life. Go about your business and every so often, look up at those cameras and blow them a kiss or a raspberry, you’re choice. There is no going back, there is no fighting B.B. so may as well have some fun with it because, in reality? We are not all that and a bag of chips; most of us are, sadly, dead boring.

But then again…maybe I work for Big Brother and I’m trying to lull you into a sense of false security…Mwhahahahaha!

The Universe XXI

UniverseAnd so the Major Arcana has laid itself out for us to see, to learn and to follow. The keys to a life well lived, to a universal understanding of the workings of our world and beyond.

The Universe is without end and so is our journey of knowledge. Our consciousness has been wakened, expanded and the edges are smooth, without a cutting edge. Our place as a Star among the galaxies has been achieved but we can never forget that we are one of many Stars – each one unique in and of his/herself. Each one with a story to tell, lessons to teach. No man or woman is without something that can be shared with us.

If we apply all the lessons taught to us through the Major Arcana – the Universe is, absolutely, within our grasp. It is a hard journey and many people that we meet may get hung up along the way but if we keep true to our course, we will arrive at the edge of the Universe and we will stake our place among the Stars who have gone before us, successfully completed their own journeys.

We are accomplished.

And on to the wet blanket portion of our program; the underside or reverse meaning of the Universe in a spread shows us a road that leads to nowhere – the proverbial and real life, dead end. A lonely and desolate place to find ourselves; we took a wrong turn somewhere and must retrace our steps to find our true path. It happens, it can be fixed, as long as we are willing to do the work required.

This card can indicate the Faux Teacher/Guru or Priest – that deceptive world of the wolf in sheep’s clothing. We have forgotten that not everything is as it appears to our eyes; we must reach deeper, sometimes, for truth. We need to remember that while everyone has a lesson to teach? Lessons are not always pleasant.

Aeon XX

AeonAeon actually has a few meaning but the Thoth deck foundation lies at the feet of Aleister Crowley. Aeon is a period of time in his interpretation; for example, he believed we are in the Aeon or Age of Horus. (A very long discussion and should receive treatment of its own, so I won’t go into it any further.)

This depiction says to us that a new age is dawning, a new age built on everything that has come before. When we accept ourselves, when we accept our light and dark sides, accept that life and what lies beyond is also light and dark, we have entered a new Aeon of “self.” Anything is possible for us – our minds have been opened to, perhaps, previous concepts that we never dreamed of, in our wildest imaginings.

A new Aeon of spiritual, material and psychological joining. The world and the universe is now our oyster. We see and understand, we accept and don’t flail impotently at life’s disappointments. We no longer stand at the edge of the abyss and scream at it, pointlessly.

The concept of the actual goal being less important than the journey undertaken, is something we truly comprehend. We can look back and say “Ahhh, I get it. I understand now. That was a lesson learned.”

On a more physical plane – this card indicates new beginnings, perhaps a birth of a new human being, about to start their own Aeon. It can mean liberation. Freedom from something that constricted, a marriage, a job but the bottom line is the freedom.

This is the card of the opening of the chrysalis. The butterfly of the soul freed.

On the other hand and isn’t there always “on the other hand” – there must be, you know – for every new day, there is a new night. Right has its left. Love has its opposite, hate. And this card too, has its opposing force.

This card can indicate imprisonment – the worst kind. Imprisonment of the mind; usually a sentence that we have imposed on ourselves through unwillingness to learn, to allow our minds to grow. To accept life on its terms instead of trying to fight against it. The “Woe is me” victim mentality. The card can also indicate someone suffering from narcissism to the maximum degree.

An quick example would be the person who refuses to age gracefully; our shopping malls are full of these sad people. Trapped in an illusion that young is somehow better. They have ignored life lessons, preferring the shallow gratification of the material world. They are to be pitied, not laughed at. They are failing the most important school in the Universe; they are getting a D in the school of life and there are no re-takes.

The Sun XIX

SunHere comes the Sun…do dee do do..Here comes the Sun, I say…it’s all right. Older folks will get that – younger folks, not so much.

The Sun. Our consciousness is waking up, it is growing and anticipating its flowering. We understand the shadows that have dogged us and we “get” that in order to truly appreciate the Sun, we have to take a walk on the dark side. For most of us, a walk on a sunny day fills our brains with endorphins, we feel confident – we feel good with ourselves. The Sun in a reading lends that confidence, that awakening to the spread. A new opportunity is dawning and waiting for us to grab hold, to grow with it.

The Sun represents the male power – the Moon is the feminine aspect, so this card takes on the characteristics of the male – growth, power, confidence, charisma – the rod is growing toward its apex. Ride those rays and take your own moment in the Sun.

Of course, the Sun has its own dark side. Stand too close and you get burned. Burn too brightly and you destroy the things around you. The Sun can indicate deep psychological issues, like delusions of grandeur. It can be a warning of the individual or someone around them being a little too full of themselves. Could be a case where if something looks too good to be true, it probably is… The Sun, when ill-defined, can be an augur of problems to come, hidden behind something bright and seemingly, full of promise. It is at this time that we must re-visit our dark side and weigh what we’ve learned in the past, apply that weight to the situation or person ahead…use confidence in our ability to discern truth from fraud.

The Moon XVIII

The Moon is the ebb and flow of life; she controls the tides and some believe, she impacts our moods.

The Moon is our intuitive self; the little voice we ignore, far too often, and to our detriment. The Moon in a reading is telling us to listen to our inner voice, to understand the ebb and flow of our lives and rather than fight the tide, to understand it. To work with the highs and the lows and to always listen to our own voice; the cacophony of those around us may mean well but the true decisions should be ours and ours alone.

The Moon represents the mirror to our souls and can help us to cross that abyss between our outer and inner worlds.

The card is telling us to look within, to travel down to our inner depths and learn from our own experiences. There may well be trouble ahead and we will need that inner voice, the inner strength to work with the onrush of the tide, to not get swept away.

Many law enforcement officers, emergency room personnel will swear to you that they are so much busier with bizarre cases and behaviours during a full moon. Consider the word; lunacy. Listen to that inner voice, travel to your inner self but don’t forget to return, to apply what you’ve learned to your outside world.

The Moon is a mystery mistress and she can show us many exciting things but remember, the Moon has a dark side as well and be warned.

The Star XVII

The light in the dark – a sign of bright potential, albeit in the future. The Star can be a cold white light, similar to the character of a fluorescent tube or the light can be warm, inviting us to the illuminating future that can be ours. The Star represents what we are all capable of achieving, individual brilliance in the surrounding dark.

We are all Stars but too many of us don’t truly see; just as many are aware of those little diamonds, they never really look at them, never really see, with their mind’s eye, completely missing the wonder and the universal individuality of the stars.

Perspective is, again, the key. The Star as an unattainable goal, far above and distant or it can be the light at the end of the tunnel. We have only to reach toward it, take the path upwards and to the lighted way. The interpretation is our own. To struggle on in the dark or to move upwards, to continue to strive to our goal – the way is lit, do we take it or remain mired in the dark?
