By the Power of Grayskull!! I have the Powerrrr!
Film “critics” and as a general rule of thumb, I ignore them, have proclaimed this movie as a box office bomb. Okay, be that as it may, I watched it last night, because film critics are arseholes.
An important note, this is NOT a movie for little kids. Real and implied violence, scary images etc.
I am not going to lie. I liked it. It is satirical, lots of IYKYK humour and I laughed. I laughed, a lot. (Yes, Dolph Lundgren does do a cameo.)
Granted, I had 3 boys, 2 of whom would come home from elementary school and watch He-Man. They owned every toy manufactured from the franchise, as well as t-shirts, hats etc. I learned by osmosis as many parents do. So, in the spirit of transparency, I do know all about He-Man, Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, Sheera, Teela, Battlecat, Sorceress, Man-at-Arms and even Orko.
The movie is cheesy in a “We don’t take this seriously” way, it was funny, lots of CGI – acceptable level considering the content. A real welcome escape from the hell we’re living in, currently. Sir Idris Elba is Man-At-Arms and is truly funny in the role. I am not thrilled with Jared Leto as Skeletor for personal reasons…I think he’s a jackass. Leto, not Skeletor.
I’m not sure what the critics expected. Get over yourselves…this is simple entertainment. It isn’t an epic. It isn’t a commentary on society. It is a movie based on a little kids’ cartoon. Not that difficult a concept unless your head is so full of your own majesty that you can’t fit through a normal door frame.
